Call for action by a high level visionary panel

The current economic downturn provides an opportunity to lay down foundations for the new world order, one where the Internet will be a key enabler. This opportunity must not be missed. Based on an analysis, the Panel offers the following recommendations:

1. to the European Commission: Strengthen significantly the current R&D efforts within the EU Framework Programme and promote a holistic multidisciplinary approach to the development of the Future Internet and encourage the development of cooperation in the global context.
2. to the European Commission and Industry: Establish with the support of industry and the research community at large, a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) initiative active in key end-user application sectors such as manufacturing, energy, transportation, healthcare, education and entertainment, to fully explore the interrelationships between advanced networked and service technologies and massively distributed end-user applications.
3. to Member States: The Future Internet Forum of Member States which has been announced, is encouraged to take bold steps towards a deeper and stronger cooperation across the existing and planned national Future Internet initiatives.
4. to Europe's Future Internet community: The Future Internet will be a global phenomenon and Europe must strive for a world-leading role. On the one hand, this means setting the pace in addressing global challenges, such as governance, accountability and sovereignty within the Future Internet, in a way that reflects our European values. In addition, research cooperation with international partners should also be a key focus.
